Chameleons, written by Onyx Gold, is about a publisher named Zia whose life goes from normal and boring, to a successful career with a love triangle. Zia works with her best friend at Sparks, a publishing company. She struggles with finding a novel that will bring her her big break, once she finds a possible success story, she also finds a possible boyfriend. Things are looking good for her. She signed a breakout story about a murderer, has an amazing boyfriend, and has a great relationship with this new author she discovered. This changes when things start to heat up between her and this author. Now she has a love triangle on her hands and is seeing some eerie similarities between her breakout novels and some real-life murders taking place. Here come the big questions: who will she choose and are these similarities just a coincidence?

This story is very insightful in many ways. It represents and shows what love is in an extraordinary way. It shows the good that comes with love, the bad, the joy, the heartache, the betrayal. This story of love is not fake, it shows aspects of real-life love. It is also a beautiful love, one that we all yearn for, and hope that we will be so lucky as to achieve that kind of love in our lifetime. Then there was the added mystery. This was exactly what was needed to take this novel from a typical romance novel to something unique and intriguing.

Another great quality of this novel is Gold’s great use of literary devices. These different devices were executed perfectly and kept me on my toes the whole read. Specifically, the author’s use of allusions. These allusions were one of the biggest tools that Gold used to create these insights into life. They also made the novel that much more in-depth, as if it added an entire level to it.

I would recommend this novel to those who enjoy reading love stories and mysteries. I would also recommend this novel to those who are fans of Criminal Minds and other such TV shows. However, I would not recommend this novel to children under 18 years of age due to violence, disturbing behavior, and extreme sexual content.

I would rate this novel 3 out of 4 stars. It was excellently written, with many different literary techniques. It has a beautiful love story filled with passion, forgiveness, strife, and more. It also has a tantalizing mystery that leaves you wanting more. However, I took one star away because there were a few grammatical errors. Overall, Chameleons is a novel that you will want to read.
