The Prodigy Slave, Book One:Journey To Winter Garden by Londyn Skye takes place in Virgina during the mid 1800s. Lily was auctioned off when she was nine-years-old by her father. Her mother was a slave and her father was the white man who owned them. A man named Jesse Adams bought Lily and treated her like some kind of animal. Jesse is the meanest, most disgusting human out there. Lily and Jesse's youngest son, James, became best friends as children. Jesse was outraged when he found out and put an end to their unique friendship. James was forced to act cold and mean to her from then on out.

Years later, James heard Lily play the piano and instantly knew she had a special gift. He took her to William Werthington, a pianist and orchestra conductor, who mentored Lily and taught her how to read and write music. James and William overcame obstacles to get Lily known. Within six months of performing, Lily was playing I grand theaters and people of all races were paying to see her.

Lily and James renewed their friendship and fell in love. Lily was living her ultimate fairytale dream. Until one night changed everything.

I'm rating this novel 3 out of 4 stars because there were many typos. The story slowed down a bit during the last few chapters, but I still thoroughly enjoyed it. The ending made my heart race and I am eager to start reading the second book in the series.

There's a lot of profanity and a bit of erotica as well. It didn't bother me at all, but may not be suited for readers who don't like those things. The intended audience is for people who love music, as well as those who love a little romance.

My favorite part is when Lily said,"Don't make no sense how I can be a human who thinks, talks, senses, feels, and even loves, just like everyone else. But just 'cause I's born in a darker wrapper than white folks, I'm treated like an animal," on page 156. My heart hurts for all the slaves in the past and wish people were never treated so terribly. My least favorite part was James's reaction at the end. I wish he would have done things differently.

I would definitely recommend this book. I liked how the author put in the laws about slavery in the beginning of the chapters. I also enjoyed the history throughout the book as well. My favorite character is Lily because she has the biggest heart and is incredibly kind to everyone, even though she was treated so poorly her entire life. In my opinion, James doesn't deserve her.
