Review by valerie_elmen -- Yesterday by Samyann
Have you ever felt like your life is one tragedy after the next? For Amanda, tragedy is what seems to be the only thing that surrounds her. She can’t bear to lose one more person in her life. Then, Mark Callahan comes into her world and changes everything. In this book, Yesterday by Samyann, Amanda meets Mark by risking her own life to save his life. From that moment on, they feel this magnetic pull towards each other. It is almost as if they knew each other already. Amanda wants to pursue this connection with Mark, but is it worth the risk of losing someone else close to her? Mark never stops chasing her and chasing the mystery of how they know each other. He shows her that there is more to life than tragedy, that love can produce joy and a life worth living.
Throughout this book, Amanda and Mark dive into the topic of reincarnation, to see if maybe they know each other in a past life. This takes Amanda on a journey back in time as a girl named Bonnie during the 1800s. Bonnie endures hardships during the Civil War, and then more during the Chicago Fire. Again, all Amanda sees in her past life are more tragedies, and it just bombards her with more questions. Will she ever escape this life of tragedy? How does her past life connect with Mark’s? Should she risk getting close to someone again?
When Samyann wrote about Bonnie’s life in the past, it felt like I was there myself. Any tragedy that Bonnie experienced, during the Civil War or the Chicago Fire, I experienced it emotionally. I couldn’t put the book down because it was so captivating. I’ve always loved learning about the Civil War, so I already knew many facts about the era. Even so, I was still able to learn something new about it, in this book. It was even a bonus that the author put historical facts at the end of her book to further explain what she mentioned in her writing. Honestly, the only thing I wanted more out of this book was even more time in the 1800s in Bonnie’s life.
I would recommend this book to history fanatics who love a story to go along with historical events. The author does a wonderful job weaving a story, with relatable characters, within the time of the Civil War and the Chicago Fire. It’s amazing how even with a fictional story and fictional characters, I was still able to learn new information over the historical periods that were discussed in Yesterday.
I give this book a 4 out of 4 stars. It was wonderfully written, with no mistakes that I could find. Samyann’s transitions from the present time to the past were very fluid, which made this a phenomenal book to read. From front to back, this was a page-turner.
