Phoenix by Patricia Simpson is a romance novel with vampires! Eva Paar’s home is suddenly invaded by Neal Moray and his hoodlums, and he is demanding that she vacate the premises immediately. The only reason she is allowed to live there is that her husband, Charles, is the commissioner of the prison of Port Pennwood. Charles has committed treason and is now dead, so now she must leave. After being kicked out of her home, she takes shelter at an abandoned shack on a beach. Soon, she sees a ship has crashed on the shore, and she sees a handsome man has become shipwrecked with no sign of other life surviving the wreck. He survives, and she finds out his name is Vinko Sunara. Little does she know that this meeting will change her life forever.

This story is written in easy-to-understand language and isn’t written with slang or any acronyms that the reader needs to know. It was well edited, and I only found one mistake. There is one slightly erotic scene in the book, but it is barely worth mentioning as one. There is no vulgar language. There are mild horror scenes in the novel, so if that is upsetting, it may be best to avoid this book.

The thing I liked most about this book was the plot and all the details of the plot. It was laid out nicely for the reader to understand. It wasn’t exactly predictable as to what was going to happen and when it was going to happen which was nice. There are some mild horror scenes in the plot, and while I am not a horror fan, I thought they went well with the story. The scenes also didn’t gross me out or frighten me, which is a plus.

The thing I disliked most about the book was the characterization of the protagonist, Eva. When I first started reading about her, I thought she was highly annoying. She came off as very standoffish, and not a very pleasant person. I also thought it was hammered into my head too much that she was a person who, “didn’t want or need a man.” I just felt like I didn’t need the point beaten over my head. Then suddenly her character made a major turn-around. I liked her character a little bit more after that, but not much.

Overall, I enjoyed this book. I would recommend this as a beach read, or a read for those looking for a romance with a little bit of a twist. While the characterization of the protagonist was not my favorite, the other characters shined, and the plot was interesting. I had a lot of fun reading this story. I am rating this book 3 out of 4 stars.
