Review by Bi3Times -- Heartaches 2 by H.M. Irwing
I would give Heartaches 2 by H.M Irwing a 3 out of 4. The book is the second installment of the Bad Boy Vibes Series and covers a very heavy, sensitive topic well. It does contain profanity, starting at location 173 of 2534, throughout the whole book in the right amount to express strong emotions without drowning the story in it. From what I could see, the only true errors found were just in spacing. That may have just been the PDF format itself or from my putting the PDF into my KIndle application to read it. Besides that, there weren't any grammatical errors to interfere with my reading.
The story in Heartaches 2 follows Rafe and Anna. The two are in a relationship and share similar traumas of being drugged and raped. They help each other move forward from their pasts, offer understanding towards lingering emotions for their abusers, and to serve almost as an anchor to each other. However, people from the past are still present and trying to keep Rafe and Anna apart and to themselves. This puts a strain not only on them but also on their relationship as they are still trying to loosen the hold their abusers have on them.
The author creates a realistic relationship by having Rafe and Anna support each other but by letting themselves still feel jealous, angry, or hurt by the other's thoughts and actions. It captures how in relationships with people trauma or mental struggles we want to be strong, helpful, and supportive but our emotions are still there. Irwing reminds us that the effects of rape are complex and that even the person suffering may not understand what they feel. While the book is the continuation of a story, the author makes it easy for the reader to understand what is currently happening and how it is the effect of previous events. This good because of how heavy the topic is readers can read the first book, take a break from the series, and be able to pick up the second without having to reread the first.
Honestly, the only reason I wouldn't give this book a 4 out of 4 is that there were times while reading it felt like there was too much figurative language or rewordings like there were two-three lines for one line of text. I was most likely because we spent most of the beginning chapters in the main characters' thought because this way of writing dwindled down (or I just became used to it) after seven. I don't this is a problem with the book or writing, it is just a personal preference.
This book is most suited for the young adult (18-25) and adult read group. Not exactly sure if men or women would be more interested in it, beyond the general women read romance more than men. The only thing is that maybe people who are victims of sexual assault just read this with caution because it might be triggering.
