“Who needs a shrink when you have a cat?” However, Amanda did need a shrink despite her gorgeous angora cat, Oprah. Yesterday by Samyann is a beautiful romance novel that emphasizes the inter-temporal power of love. Amanda Parker, a broken-hearted young woman incidentally saves the life of a young police officer, Mark Callaghan, from a catastrophic accident. Afterward, they do not seem to be able to shake the feeling that they have met somewhere before.

This is a story about reincarnation but beautifully told. It makes one give the subject a fair consideration. Amanda, through a process of directed regressions, takes a walk into her past life with her god-mother who happens to be a psychiatrist. The author is very helpful in the narration. The time of each event is clearly stated at each phase to eliminate confusion, as the narration transitions through time. The character development in the book is superb. The characters are really intriguing and easily aligned. The narration is rather tragic as it takes us through Amanda’s past life where she was a girl named Bonnie, living in Virginia. The story is very heart wrenching and almost, almost, drew a tear from my eyes.

One thing I really love about the book is how the author takes care of the narration. She creates congruence in her narration, which ensures that the reader is not lost. The book has an easy flow which makes it difficult to drop, with the right amount of humor and seriousness. Also, the book’s narration is also very detailed, as it enunciates sounds like the “click-clatter-click-clatter-click of iron wheels on steel rails”. This kind of enunciations are scattered throughout the book, and it greatly helps the reader conjure graphic images of the scenes. Also, the author took care to describe events and occurrences, such as the American Civil War and the Chicago fire which took place during the era in which the book was set. The author’s vocabulary is also very rich and suitable for a broad spectrum of readers.

However, one thing I dislike about the book is that the author tended to drag out the narration. The author often introduced the character’s thoughts which he goes on to perform. This could have just been described in the actual action-process and spare the reader the extra time. Also, the book contains erotic scenes that may be disturbing for some people. However, the author did a good job, and the book was definitely a good read, irrespective of religious inclination.

The book is a real page-turner, and I had a good time reading it. I rate it 4 out of 4 stars. The plot and character development of the book were excellent. The book is well-edited, and it contained no typographical errors which give it a smooth reading. I recommend this book to all lovers of historical fiction and romance novels. I promise you will fall in love with the characters.

I also read Yesterday and agree it was a wonderful book. I think was drew me in most were Samyann's characters. I'm curious did you have a favourite character in the book?
