This is a review of Heartaches 3 by H.M. Irwing. In this novel, we find Rafe and Anna, our protagonists, already in love with each other. They had to overcome many obstacles to find love but their journey is not yet over. For their ‘happily ever after’ to begin, they must neutralize the enemies whose very existence threatens their happiness.

I rate this book 3 out of 4. I have many positive impressions of Heartaches 3. The author is very obviously a skilled writer because she was able to artfully portray all the characters, both their physical attributes and their emotional states. I also appreciated that she gave readers backgrounds of the various characters and their relationships without rehashing either of the previous novels in the series. It felt like just the right amount of history and background to understand each character and what their motives were for the things they said and did. I also give the author credit for her depiction of the sexual scenes. The scenes were graphic which led to them being vividly imagined and at no point did they feel overdone, forced or clumsy.

Another indication of the author’s proficiency was her ability to effectively intertwine the concurrent happenings of the non-primary characters. In the middle of the novel a wedding took place between two adjunct characters but this detracted in no way from the main story. On this same point, although some chapters were fully dedicated to the stories of non-primary characters, the overall story did not feel compartmentalized. I still imagined that the events were all occurring simultaneously.

I did not give Heartaches 3 a higher rating for a few reasons. As I read Irwing’s words, it seemed as if the words flowed with great ease from her pen. But she put so much of them in most sentences that I often found myself lost. I had to subconsciously skip over words or reread sentences in order to fully understand what I was reading. Another issue was that the characters’ dialogues seemed unnatural at times and I had to check whether I was reading narration or speech. Of course, people use words in everyday life that may be uncommon or unfamiliar to some, but the vocabulary sometimes seemed unlikely for people who were talking among friends.

The third issue I would mention is that, while the novel in general progresses at a very good pace, the first chapter had two characters stuck in the same scene for 7 pages. The author tried to balance the present with the past so that readers could get some background from the previous books, but it took a bit too long. Lastly, the book ended a little too perfectly; all Rafe and Anna’s problems were completely resolved. Although this was a work of fiction, I felt that the fairy tale ending was too unrealistic because life just doesn’t work that way.

I would recommend Heartaches 3 to all adults. It was a very good read and I believe it would be enjoyed by romantics and non-romantics alike. Please note that the novel contains at least 34 F words and 2 sexually- graphic scenes.
