Yesterday by Samyann

After an implausible beginning, (never explained), Yesterday by Samyann, settled into a nice, but predictable romance story. Two main characters dominate the novel, Amanda Parker and Mark Callahan. The two met when Amanda is in the right place, at the right time, and saves Mark’s life. From the beginning, both feel they have met before but cannot place where or when. The attraction is immediate and more than just chemistry between them.

The premise of the story is developed around an old clock. The clock has been seen by Amanda in an antique store and she is immediately drawn to it but does not know why. Because she cannot stop thinking about the clock, she negotiates with the store owner to purchase it. Later, when Mark and Amanda form a relationship, he visits her home. Mark sees the clock, and he too, is drawn to it. With Amanda’s permission, Mark begins to dismantle the clock to see if there maybe clues to their feelings of Deja vu. Upon delving into the workings of the clock, it is apparent there was a great deal of fire damage to the internal organs. This finding intrigues them both even further to delve into the clock’s history.

Amanda’s close friend, Godmother and a counselor by the name of Mary, suggests the two undergo regression therapy. Mary’s idea being that regression takes one back to what was. She is also a firm believer that the world is cyclical, or that life repeats itself. Apparently, Mary can accomplish regression therapy without any harm being caused.

When Amanda and Mark go through regression at various stages, they regress individually to past decades. Two new stories evolve. They regress back to the time of the Civil War and the Great Chicago Fire as different people with different names. The historical happenings were accurate and factual but tended to take away from the romance story rather than add to it. I liked least the lengthy minutia of the past. I liked best the descriptions of the people in the story and their feelings. These were very revealing, adding a lot of interest to the respective characters.

I gave Yesterday by Samyann 2 out of 4 stars. Although extensive source material was provided for the reader to “fact check” if so inclined, the writing style was a little sophomoric for me. Reader appeal could be almost any age except for the inappropriate language.
