Review by gichimuAnn -- Sugar & Spice by H M Irwing
"Good books, like good friends, are few and chosen. The more select, the more enjoyable"-Louissa May Alcott. And H. M. Irwing's book is definitely a good book. Most romance novels I've read involve a random meeting, a steaming love story, a few problems and a happily ever after. Not this book. This book had me intrigued at every twist and turn. I couldn't predict what is gonna happen next and that is my BEST aspect of this book.
Catherine Little, Cat, is a 16 year old ambitious nerd who has her whole life all figured out until a night of pleasure with a stranger she doesn't plan on meeting again happens. However, fate has different plans for her, she gets pregnant and is forced to deal with a 28-year-old Prince of Saudi Arabia, Sadiq Al Fayyad. Both of them come from different worlds and have different beliefs which makes it very difficult for them to be together. But from that night onwards both their lives seem to revolve around each other.
I loved reading this book as the writing is mesmerizing. The attraction between Cat and Sadiq is almost palpable. The book alternates, the story being told from both Cat's and Sadiq's perspective. The reader is therefore cognizant of their thoughts and actions hence one is immersed fully in the tale. The book is a romance, a mystery and a thriller.
Both characters are my favourite aspect of the book. Sadiq comes off as strong, religious, persuasive, tough and intense. Cat is determined, honest, strong and very brilliant. She misses passion all her life and she only becomes passionate after she meets Sadiq. She feels like he's driving her insane but she still holds her own with whatever he brings her way. Sadiq on the other hand becomes very obsessive of Cat which has not happened all his life.
Like Cat, this book introduced me to a new culture and religion. The author however, ensures that all my questions concerning Sadiq's culture were answered in the book. That was a great aspect of the book and had me spell-bound and transfixed the whole time I was reading it.
I came across several grammatical errors, which is my least favorite aspect of the book. They were not distracting but they are a few too many to justify a perfect rating. I also noticed that the don't size is an inch too small and although I managed to read, I struggled a lot. The book could therefore use another round of editing.
The book has no sex scenes or any use of profanity language.
I rate Sugar and Spice by H. M. Irwing 3 out of 4 stars and if the above errors are cleaned up, this romance can achieve a perfect rating. Readers who enjoy romance, mysteries and thrillers will enjoy this novel. It is a suitable read for all readers.
