The sound of Spring by G.X Chen is a book that is about love, loss, and fighting against injustices. The story begins with a girl named Chun Ming. She is just like many young adults and has a very idealistic view of life and love. She focuses a lot on her family and her boyfriend, Fang Si Jun. The story starts fairly light-hearted but quickly turns more serious and sad. Chun Ming is forced to become stronger and more self-disciplined. She is also forced to look at the world around her without eyes blinded by love and lies, to see who the bad guys are.
There are many things that I liked about this book. First, I loved the descriptive language. Everything in this story was very well described, so you can almost see what Chun Ming was seeing when she looked out a window or rode on the bus. Second, I liked how well developed the characters are. Based on the words they say and their interactions with Chun Ming you understand the beliefs and thoughts of everyone, even though it is in the first-person perspective. Third, I liked how the book ended. Many would think it is a cliffhanger, but to me, it was not. Everything important in the book was resolved and you saw how Chun Ming grew as a person. That was the perfect ending in my opinion.
There was only one thing that I disliked about this book and that was the actual pace of the story. About 70% of the book was about Chun Ming and her interaction with her family, friends, and boyfriend. That is important to develop the story, but I feel that the end of the book was a bit rushed because of it. Everything happened very quickly towards the end and, while the ending was good, I feel that it happened very abruptly.
When evaluating my likes and dislikes I have to give it a 2 out of 4. This book was a very interesting read with very few punctuation problems, but the pace of the story affected my enjoyment of the book. The beginning was far too long and the ending was far too hurried for my liking. However, the descriptive language added so much to this story that I could not rate it anything lower than this. It may not have been the perfect story for me, but it just may be the perfect story for the younger crowd.
In the end, I would recommend this book to anyone 16 - 30. There is no profanity and the flowery language would appeal to the younger crowd. Young adults will also be able to relate to the feelings of doubts, love, and loss that Chun Ming ultimately feels. There may be some harder topics such as political moments and mention of death, but nothing too graphic. It is a light to serious book that would appeal to many people in this age range.
