This book gets off to a slow start. It reads more like a relaxing evening. It took a few days to really get interested in it and invest in the characters. I felt that the book was well done but it did seem a bit cheesy for me. There were some very minor erotic descriptions, level 1.

The author was extremely descriptive of settings and details, sometimes to a fault. I also found the meeting of the main characters a little off putting. I was able to move past that and still came to love them. It took some perseverance in light of our current highlighting of sexual abuse in the media.

For me this book was something comfy I could settle into when I was tired or upset. There wasn’t really suspense or excitement but sometimes I knew I could just take a breather and settle in with Marian and Johnathan. Because this was the general ambiance, the murder was a little awkward for me.

The author does a great job with their budding romance and again as he switches to their last days , but I am left with some questions regarding the middle. I would have loved the details to be distributed more evenly.

I found the title Il-fitting. The reference to breaking sandcastles in the book was minor and not necessarily tied to the main characters.

I am excited to read more from this author in the future though I do feel that interest in these characters is complete. I rate this book a 3 out of 4.
