The book Followed my Star by A.R. Annahita is the story of two people from different backgrounds, falling in love but struggling to agree on certain aspects of their relationship.

The narration is told in the first person from the point of view of our protagonist, Annahita. She immigrated from Iran to Germany when she was young to get away from the conflicts between Iraq and her birth country. Her parents divorced due to her father being abusive. Since then, Annahita has lived a pretty normal life. One day, while meeting up with friends, she encounters a man named Chris. Chris is an American soldier. They soon fall madly in love. The only issue between them is their love for their respective countries. Chris wants to return to America but our main character wants to remain in Germany because she fears she would miss her family and friends too much, and she likes living in Germany. The story continues to unravel around this plot.

The way the writer tells the story is interesting. We only get one version of what is going on between the two lovers, because only Annahita voices what she thinks and does. She goes into detail about her feelings and thoughts and describes everything very minutely. I like the vocabulary used, I find it not too complex but still strong, boosting the book's topicality.

Unfortunately, I found this story a little too stretched. The majority of the book is a description of how much they love each other and it gets boring at a certain point when it just feels like a lot of repetition. When the author decides to go deeper about something it often is over-detailed. For example "The fish arrived on a plate with potatoes and salad that we shared with each other. There were three different sauces: red, green and white. They all tasted delicious. The food was a dream. The fish was freshly caught from the sea and the vegetables were locally sourced from a farmer. Food simply tasted so much better if you sourced all the ingredients from your neighborhood". This description could have been way shorter because it didn't raise anything important about the plot. The editorial was not bad but I did find some mistakes. I had also hoped that their very different backgrounds would have had a greater influence in the story and it could have added a bit of a historical side.

Finally, I give Followed my Star a 2 out of 4 stars because I didn't find the story very engaging and eventful. However, I believe someone who likes a simple love story could enjoy it. It is unfortunate that this book is written this way because the main idea is good but in my opinion, it would require a better interpretation.
