A girl, a cat, a clock, and a sense of experience all tie together in this reincarnation novel. Amanda Parker finds herself in a situation of heroism after saving Mark Callahan’s life. This brings together the unlikely two sparking substantial feelings of familiarity. Amanda is leery of love after having many loses in her life, while Mark gravitates so strongly to her that no amount of resistance will send him away. The author navigates us through their process of discovering themselves and each other to see why their bond is so resilient.
While reading Yesterday by Samyann, I find myself bonded to many of the characters created. Amanda is an antique appraiser, which fits because she relates positive memories with objects from the past. Mary Axelrod is Amanda’s best friend and a psychotherapist who helps guide the two with Past Life Therapy. This story touches on relationships on different levels. Mary helps them analyze family and spousal relationships, all with an unfiltered wit.
I would give an overall rating of 3 out of 4 stars. I really enjoyed the genuineness of the characters produced by Samyann. The women in this novel are smart and resourceful; they learn how to handle tough situations with authority and grace. The men show such compassion and patience, which reinforces their masculinity creating depth to the characters. Plus the fact that Samyann’s story jumps through time we see many more characters and have that many more sentiments toward each personality. I also like how sounds are used to trigger memories; it brings you along for the journey.
Although there were a few things I disliked in the novel Yesterday, it did bother me the brief paragraphs, seemingly placed to catch up the reader, would often leave me feeling like this was an update thrown at me as opposed to engulfing me into the story. It was hard to follow which characters were which because of the time jumps; also making me frequently confused about the character’s relation to the story. This is why I would not give a full 4-star rating.
I would not recommend this book to anyone that doesn’t like flashbacks; the story is not fluent in time. I would also not recommend the book if you don’t believe or care to read about past lives. I would highly recommend this book to any person looking for a good love story. It would especially be interesting to anyone that likes the Civil War Era. Overall, I really liked the book and looked forward to any opportunity I had to read it. Samyann did engulf me into feeling like I was also crossing Confederate lines, having tea with a friend, or hearing St. Michael’s chimes on a beautifully handcrafted clock.
