Heartaches, by H.M Irwing is the first part of a romance series centred around the lives of two individuals who are drawn to each other trough their shared trauma.
Anna thought her and her mother had a tough life since the passing of her father. However, things get worse after the murder of her aggressive stepfather. People she thought she loved, betray her and took part in her being drugged and abused. Already ridiculed and bullied in her collage, she stops trying and allows herself to become a recluse. That is until she meets Rafe, the only person who saw through her pain and decided to help her get the justice she deserved. Rafe has had a troubled childhood and a dangerous army career, the last thing he needs is more on his plate. But something in Anna's struggle resonates with his own and he becomes determined to help her. Seeking out justice against those with money and power seem fruitless, but they try anyway.
This story line itself was intriguing but overall a difficult read. From the start it was confusing to understand the characters as there were too many opposing descriptions of how they were feeling. It seemed to make simple topics difficult to understand just by having too many explanations. There was a lot of jumping from topic to topic within one conversation which also made the story hard to follow and keep track of how the main character was feeling.
The way in which the personality of the main character kept on changing was also difficult to understand. It seemed like Anna and sometimes Rafe was being written to have many different personalities. As the reader this was hard to visualise with the overall story line.
What i liked most about the story was that even though it started off as just about Anna, the author made it so that both the main characters - who met each other by random - had something in common. This is what made me want to continue reading.
What i disliked the most was that the how confusing it was to relate to the character. It seemed like she was feeling many different emotions at once, which may have been done so that the reader feels pity for her situation, but it just made me want to roll my eyes and skip ahead.
I would rate this book 2 out of 4 stars. This rating is due to how the story made me question if i read correctly and having to re-read some paragraphs to understand how the character was feeling. There were no grammatical errors so it may have been professionally edited. This story could have been developed much more as the plot is very interesting and would make a really good read which is why i didn't give it one star.
