The Second Cup , by Sarah Marie Graye

The Second Cup started off with a line that sucked me right in. "Today is the day". But after that initial prologue, and reading the first couple of chapters, I wasn’t so sure about what this book was about anymore. I read the jacket book summary- “can someone take your suicide if you don’t use it”, but I just couldn’t see where it was going yet.

I enjoyed the little chapter breaks about the tea and different varieties and ways to drink it, but even with that, I still couldn’t understand how that tied into the story. The Second Cup had interesting characters, lots of twists that I wasn’t expecting, and the story and editing was well written. It was very clever how certain parts of the story tied together and came back full circle. But along with that, there were too many unnecessary flashbacks and background information, which felt more like filler than anything that was relevant to the actual story.

I read about 100 pages of the book (259 total) in one sitting, with intentions on finishing it the next day. But it ended up taking me almost a week to get back to finishing it, because it just didn’t have my attention like it should have. I found myself skimming over certain parts, or drifting off into my own thoughts while reading it, and then I’d have to go back and make sure I re-read it. The bits about the tea, although fascinating, really held no meaning to me once the book was completed.

I was hoping to get more insight into the characters and stories, but I felt like they really jumped around a lot and I couldn’t quite make sense on what the correlation was between some of their backstories, and what was happening in the present. One thing I did enjoy quite a bit was the ending, the epilogue I suppose, which was almost like a “where are they now” and I felt that was a really nice way to sum up the book. It wasn’t until the very last part of the book that I felt like I completely understood the premise, and had that been introduced earlier, I believe it would have made more sense.

Overall, I would rate this book 3 out of 4 stars . Well written, well edited, I noticed no typos or grammar issues while I was reading; just not as cohesive for me as I typically like. This is a good book for young adults, its clean and no profanity, but also a good book for women of all ages. This would be a great book to take on a plane or train ride to pass the time. I would read more books written by Sarah Marie Graye in the future.
