When God created Adam he told them to be fruitful and multiply. We know the story it is hard not to when it's the Genesis of all our problems. Eve was tricked into eating the forbidden fruit by the serpent and she, in turn, lured Adam and so they gained the knowledge of good and evil which made them aware of their state of undress. Shame was the first emotion they both felt after eating the fruit. Here is the interesting part though when Eve ate the fruit the realization of her nudity was oblivious when she gave Adam the fruit the realization was all too clear one wonders what kind of looks they gave each other to feel such shame. The author tells us how the shame of being naked does not just define their state of undress it also brings the issue of inadequacy. Feelings of inadequacy were the result of partaking the fruit of knowledge just like the other consequences that followed after. Adam and Eve experienced the first death when they ate the fruit, which the author defines as relational death spiritual and physical death would soon follow.
The story of Adam and Eve and their off-springs. We take a look at the other repercussions aside from death. God confronted Adam and Eve over what they had done and both had very interesting things to say Adam blamed the wife she, in turn, blamed Serpent. However, observe the question God focused on was their state of nakedness and who told them that they were naked. Interesting points are brought out by the author including the first mention of the word sin. Cain's relationship with Abel is also brought up turns out Cain thought that being a farmer was a far more superior job than being a livestock farmer. Here is the first classic case of self-importance folks.
Faith is also an issue raised. The author takes a look at the story of Jesus and his disciples. At some point, the disciples were unable to cast out a demon which troubled them and they asked Jesus why they could not do it. Jesus compared their faith to a mustard seed and told them their faith was lacking. The author talks about faith and describes it in two aspects; little faith and Real Faith he then gives us a comparison of where the two aspects of faith were demonstrated in the bible. Additionally, he brings the issue of Jesus crucifixion for mankind sin. Jesus was the only son of Adam who was born without original sin. It is hard to understand the meaning of this but once you look at the optics you realize why. He was conceived by the Holy Spirit and born of a virgin there was nothing ordinary about His birth it was a miracle. Jesus was born in the same way we are and he was able to experience the same things we do the difference that sets him apart from us is that the Holy Spirit was a part of him and enabled him to shun sin as a son of Adam.
When Jesus was near death asked God why HE had forsaken Him at this point Christ was experiencing spiritual and relational death it must have been very tormenting to be torn away from God at that moment. I feel like everyone cries at that point while watching the film because you feel like your heart is literally being torn apart. When it was over He placed his spirit into God’s Hands. We do not understand what sacrifice Christ made for us but I feel that the author has done a great job of describing the sacrifice that brought us back to God. It is difficult to comprehend how the death of one man could save all mankind but this is some of the questions the author attempts to answer.
There are a number of issues raised in the book. I only mentioned the ones that stood out for me. This is definitely an insightful book on my part. I Love that the writer includes personal testaments of the presence of God and Satan in his life. It makes him relatable. I also like the questions he asks after every end chapter very perceptive. I would recommend this book to anyone who is interested in a deeper understanding of the Christian Faith. WHO TOLD YOU THAT YOU WERE NAKED an insightful look towards sin, faith, and salvation. I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. It was mostly teachable moments for me .the author is obviously an expert on the subject. Honestly, his knowledge was refreshing. William. E. Combs book was published by Carpenter's son Publishing, Franklin, Tennessee.
