Health tips, myths, and tricks by Dr. Morton E Tavel MD, is an exceptional science and medical non-fiction. The book tackles our health; giving insights into things we very often assume or take lightly. The author gives us information to liberate us from "snake oil" (scums).
The book is divided into three parts: these divisions are derived from the title. The first part is health tips. Here he covers the pros and cons of the different foods, water, exercising, medicine among many other issues that he raises. Giving its impact on our health, what to take and even what to avoid. Secondly, he divulges into myths some have been there since decades ago and how they are simply made up stories. An example he gives is the bottled water versus tap water if you read you will understand: I will not elaborate as it will be a spoiler. And the final part is the tricks that we encounter day-to-day. The tricks being used by quacks in the health industry just to make you as a consumer spend a ridiculously high amount of money on a product you don't even need. In between, you will discover so much about foods related to some diseases; causes, prevention among many others.
Dr. Morton is a retired physician specializing in internal medicine and cardiovascular diseases. With the vast knowledge, he has accumulated over the years of both practicing and teaching he eloquently writes this book that is a source of information. The language he has used is simple with no margins that could make comprehension of the text to be complicated. The research was excellently done with numeric highlights used for citations. In between the texts, he provides links for additional information.
This book was an eye-opener for me as there are facts that I have always assumed to be myths. He has clarified the issue of conventional medicine that is scientifically proven ones against alternative medicine like herbal, spiritual and cultural ones. The facts were clearly stated with explanations and reasons backing them up. Also, the references and the examples he gives substantiate his statements.
There is nothing I didn't like in this book. The editing was well done and the author has already done some corrections as evident on page 123: the spacing issue has been rectified. The only recommendation I can give is doing a current book due to the fact that the statistics used is a bit outdated.
I rate this book a 4 out of 4 stars. The issue stated above didn't distract me at all and the errors I encountered are very minimal. I recommend this book to lovers of medical non-fiction. Also, its good for health and nutrition students, as, they can use it for research purposes. Finally, its a good book for everyone who is cautious about their health and wellbeing.
