Who Told You That You Were Naked by William E. Combs was a well written book meant to delve deeper into the Bible and explain the meaning of its texts and stories. I would go about rating this book a 3 out of 4 stars. The flow of the book was mostly easy to follow. Mr. Combs did a wonderful job of explaining the meaning of passages and stories in a way that could easily be understood by someone who was completely unfamiliar with the Bible itself.
Some of the author inserted anecdotal sections between chapters or main points in the text can have good and bad effects on certain readers. In a positive, those little bits of story from the author show a sense of reality to the topic and how it could be explained in a real life scenario. It also almost grants the author a less formal means of communication with the reader while still maintaining a sense of relevance to the text itself. However those same stories can affect the flow of the overall book and may leave some readers wondering as to why the author chose to write them when it hinders the flow.
The breakdown of Biblical passages into text that could be more easily understood was incredibly helpful. It offered the reader a much better insight as to the purpose of some passages and in others, it offered a more clear description on the lesson or advice held within. Beginning with the Creation story and Garden of Eden was a natural starting point and it set the tone for the rest of the book. Mr. Combs delved into the meaning of sin in reference to Eve falling victim to manipulation and trickery by the serpent. Mr. Combs also did a wonderful job using excerpts from Biblical passages to use as examples or aid when trying to convey a particular point or enhance one of his personal stories.
The book gives an overall great breakdown of the written word of God in the Old Testament. Beginning, fittingly enough, at the beginning with the story of Adam and Eve and Creation. With the basis covered. Mr. Combs expands a little bit more in detail on certain passages and texts that have been much discussed over time. Though no one can truly know the exact meaning to some passages, one must rely on faith in both God and His written word and that is an overall powerful message to convey.
Who Told You That You Were Naked by William E. Combs was a book I honestly never would have thought to read, nor had I heard of it. The first chapter presented a challenge in regards to the flow of the writing and the use of personal storytelling within the framework of the chapter. It was a well written book overall. Some things were unconventional in the way they were presented but I give this book a 3 out of 4 star rating all day. The explanations of complex and or confusing passages were well thought out and easily conveyed to the reader. I would certainly recommend this book to anyone of faith or to those that are searching for faith or guidance
