I started to read this book with much expectation. I wanted to learn and unlearn some things. I was not disappointed. Throughout the book Health tips, myths and tricks, a physician’s advice, health information to liberate us from “snake oil, Morton E. Tavel, M.D made attempts to explain in details several discussions, myths and ideologies that several people hold with regards to health. I found it very enlightening with facts and figures to support every recommendation in each chapter.
He is very well informed on societal perceptions about food, health, lifestyle, and so on. He took each area and tried to correct misconceptions, while also reinforcing the right habits. He addressed basic topics. Topics that people discuss every now and then, and not necessarily waiting to get to the hospital before you hear of these issues. For example, issues surrounding organic foods, genetically modified foods, energy drinks, back pain, hypertension, exercise, bottled water, and so on.
Although the book has many numbers from various data that may discourage the reader initially and appear boring, the core information is summarized after each discourse. Medical books and many books on health are sometimes boring to read, particularly if you are not a health care professional. The author however has his way around words that will keep you captivated while reading. There are no pictures to buttress points. Meanwhile a few pictures here and there would make this book more interesting if included.
There is so much wrong information out there about many of the topics discussed here that I feel most people need to grab this book and read. It will be beneficial to health workers as well, so that they can be more armed to provide the right information to their clients, particularly those in developing nations. If you have been wondering where to get basic information about health- related issues, like what food to or not to eat, why and when you should have your routine health checks, how to prevent or manage some chronic illnesses like hypertension, the beneficial effects of some foods like chocolates, tea, and so on; this is the book for you to read.
Health tips, myths, and tricks, a physician’s advice, health information to liberate us from “snake oil” is a professionally edited book as very few errors were noticed. I would rate this book 4 out of 4 stars because it is so detailed and well written. It addresses so many issues to be contained in just one book. You will desire to read and to know more if you are open-minded, when you pick a copy.
