Health Tips, Myths and Ticks: A Physicians Advice by Morton E. Travel, MD, FACC is an informative and comprehensive book derived from the author's personal biomedical background and vast medical researches. The book consists of sixty-two chapters that are divided into three parts: Tips, Myths and Tricks.

The first section, Tips, answers some of our common health dilemmas and aims to impart to its readers how to incorporate healthy habits into their daily lives for a healthier and longer physical outlook. The second part, Myths, is about common medical misconceptions and finally, Tricks, tackles medical fads that are highly advertised by the media and the facts about them.

While reading I realized that this book emphasizes cardiovascular health which explains a lot because, the author, Dr. Travel, MD, FACC, is a retired physician in internal medicine and cardiovascular diseases. He was also a Clinical Professor at Indiana University School of Medicine. He was a past president of local and Indiana State Divisions of the American Heart Association. He is a public speaker that presented numerous speeches and lectures.

This is actually the first time I read a book written by a physician that discuss health and medicine, I am more into fictions, crime and romance novels so I am greatly surprised that I enjoyed reading this book. I like that the author started Chapter 1 with tips to losing weight which, in my opinion, is the most popular searched health topic. I also find myself reflecting on my health choices while reading this book. This book is not only informative but also an eye-opener for people who do not make health their priority.

I appreciate how, the author, in each chapter, talks about the things that we think we know and presents or counters with facts backed up by research and studies done by different institutions and ends with his own conclusions often with humor that we may adopt in our lives.

The author also warns his readers of frauds orchestrated by Pharmaceutical companies, fed by the media that promises a “miraculous” result but fails to present enough data and research on their product and he also advise us to be wise and not succumb to these advertisements.

I also like how he emphasized the importance of some things that we often set aside or take for granted like a good breakfast in the morning and enough sleep time and its quality. I love how I learned a lot of new things like too much consumption of fish may lead us to poison because of mercury that is innate with fishes, also pregnant women should refrain from eating fish during their term. I also learned that meat should be cooked to less well done at lower temperature.

I rate this book 4 stars out of 4. This book is really helpful and deserves to be on your shelf.bI recommend this to health-conscious people, medical practitioners and researchers.
