Health Tips, Myths, and Tricks: A Physician’s Advice is written by Morton E. Tavel, MD. It is a thoroughly interesting book about what health scams are thrown out there with no evidence to back them up. Morton goes through, chapter by chapter, and totally debunks many health myths ranging from unhealthy weight loss pans to the gluten-free diet. Along with his myth debunking, Morton also gives many helpful insights into such things as how to properly use a painkiller, the benefits of regular exercise, and what fish are not healthy to eat. Last but not least Morton gives some helpful advice on avoiding so-called “Snake Oil Scams” such as detoxifying the body of toxins and using supplements to improve body health.
This book was extremely interesting. I really enjoyed the many subjects covered in the book and found it to be helpful personally as it answered some questions I had. It was a more serious read, as it did not follow a story line, but still had no problem keeping my attention. I found that the author had a delightfully dry sense of humor as he warned against the many scams out there in the health community. His humor and the excellent flow of the book made it easy to read. The organization of ideas, as well as the overall structure of the book, was very good. It did not skip around or present ideas in an unorganized manner. There were no parts of the book that I disliked.
I give this book a rating of 4 out of 4 stars. It was such a good book that I think it called for a 4 star rating. It was also very well organized and written so there was no reason to demote it to a 3 star rating. It was an excellent read that I think anybody interested in gaining a knowledge of health would enjoy reading. The range of topics covered was wide, and the insight offered into each topic was very professional. The advice also made good sense and was easy to understand.
I would recommend this book to any adult or young adult reader curious about improving their health. I would not recommend it to a child as it is definitely an adult read and would not keep their attention well. I would also not recommend it to anybody not interested in health reading as it is purely a book about improving one’s knowledge of health.
This book was very well edited as I noticed no spelling errors. The organization was also very good and the pages easy to read. The only thing that was confusing was a symbol added, as decoration I assume, after the number in each chapter heading that looks like a zero. This symbol made it hard to tell if the chapter number was a one or a ten, a two or a twenty, etc. If this small thing was fixed, there would be no flaws to book to my knowledge.
