Having been by my adoptive father's bedside few weeks after the cancer diagnosis, witnessing first-hand how he battled cancer and chemotherapy symptoms and eventually watching him breathe his last that fateful morning, it’s only natural that a cancer-related topic should pique my interest. It’s no surprise that I couldn't resist the opportunity to read Manifesto-for-a-Cancer-Patient by Colleen Huber, NMD. For a naturopathic oncologist who has practiced the profession in her own clinic for over a decade, Colleen Huber, NMD, comes over as an authority in alternative medicine–-someone whose opinion on natural therapy should be taken seriously. And having handled a lot of cancer cases for over ten years from both the conventional and naturopathic standpoints, she is better informed as to the best course of treatment.
Manifesto-for-a-Cancer-Patient by Colleen Huber is a collection of published articles, analyzed data of cancer patients in her hospital, and her personal encounter with cancer patients in general. The 280-page book is a revelation regarding deadly cancer as it enlightens the reader about the disease; starting with a general description of the unfortunate situation most cancer patients find themselves with regard to the rather unfortunate treatment options offered by conventional medicine.
Colleen Huber, NMD goes on to introduce the reader to a much better alternative treatment option– the natural approach– which had been sidelined by conventional medicine for decades. I liked the bravery in exposing selfishness and corruption by Pharma and the likes, and how they are short-changing sufferers of cancer, as this will help cancer patients understand what they are up against and take precautionary measures. The only aspect of this book I didn't like was the tendency to repeat and paraphrase certain items of information because it expanded an already voluminous book.
The book may not be an easy read and some of the chapters might prove a tiresome bore for those who are not involved in medicine, or who are not familiar with scientific or medical terms. You are actually forewarned before you get to those chapters though, and it is worth the effort for this category of readers when one considers what a mine of information it actually is, and particularly rewarding if the motive is to learn how best to go about fighting the disease.
One of the interesting points in this book is that it sheds some light on the category of people who are much more prone to the disease with regard to character traits and lifestyle, and how conventional medicine seems to exploit that to its advantage. It also sheds light on the corruption in US medical research, which has largely hindered meaningful and progressive research into better alternative treatment courses for cancer.
I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars as it is very revealing, direct and informative. For a 280-page book, there were very few typos, indicating that it was professionally edited. I’m happy to have read this book, and I would recommend it to every cancer patient and their relatives because this book would appeal to them. I know the information in this book will be a timely life-saver for a lot of cancer patients out there.
