Combs’ retelling of the first few chapters of Genesis was just as described: refreshing. He brought in detailed descriptions of the Garden of Eden as well as a more in-depth analysis of Adam’s character which breathed new life into the Creation story. Obviously, one would want to have into account that this retelling is not cannon, and contradicts with the original Word slightly.

However, after chapter three, this retelling of Scripture stops. While I felt as though the first three chapters were intended for an experienced Christian looking for something new, chapters five through ten provide a much more straightforward about Salvation and the very basics of Christianity which seems much more fit for a newly converted Christian. I feel left with confusion about who the intended audience of this book really is. It could be possible that this book is intended for a group of both new and experienced Christians to study together. The discussion questions are insightful and could bring about compelling conversations within a group.

Besides the content of the book, there were other formatting choices that I disliked. The book uses so many different fonts that I can barely track them all, including one small segment on pages 157-160 where the font transitions to something that looks like Comic Sans. Although some of the font changes are necessary to decipher between different segments such as quotes Scripture and the parts where the Bible is paraphrased, the extraneous changes left the work feeling more confusing than organized. Overall, this is a short, concise book and any time spent reading books related to God’s Word is not wasted.

The book started out well, and provides insights about God's Word throughout. I rate this book a three out of four.
