I chose to review Roadmap to the End of Days by Daniel Friedmann as the religious concept of End of Days intrigued me, particularly as a Christian struggling with mankind’s place in the big picture. Is the End of Days predetermined by the Almighty, or does mankind’s free will have an effect? Does history repeat itself, or can we change our destiny?
The table of contents appeared to be straight forward, listing 10 chapters from an introduction to the concept of End of Days, through to Where to from Here. A variety of ideas were covered within the chapters, including the relationship between historical events and various religious personages and references (Christian, Jewish and Muslim), how mankind prevents the Cosmic Purpose being achieved by not following various rules/commandments supplied, the relationship between the Creation days and historical time, how evil will try to prevent mankind moving toward final enlightenment, and the various preparations to be made for the End of Days. There was considerable discussion about the struggle to meet the Cosmic Purpose and how Amalek (descendants of Esau, one of the sons of Isaac) have continually hindered and disrupted this achievement. This interference will result in a final conflict, where Gog and Magog (seen as forces of evil) will battle with mankind and also the Almighty.
Unfortunately, I found the book to be a difficult read, mainly due to being continually referred to the additional information, of which there was a considerable amount. The first 16 pages of the book was made up of the table of contents, information about the author, including his previous books, and praise for the current book. There were 92 pages of appendices, glossary, and explanatory tables and figures, with only 98 pages of actual writing. This resulted in a very disjointed read as I was flipping back and forth repeatedly and losing my place within the writing, then having to find my place again to continue. This also has an affect on comprehension of the concepts being described, as I had to go over a number of pages already completed to ensure full understanding once I returned from the appendices.
There were also a number of errors in the book with regard to editing, including a numerical listing of laws to be followed that were all numbered 1., and numerous unused colons and back slashes that appeared in the middle of sentences for no reason.
Unfortunately, I can only give this book 2 out of 4 stars, mainly due to the lack of flow within the writing, and the number of typographical errors found. I would recommend this book to academics and students of religion that may have a more thorough grounding in the basic concepts that were enlarged upon in this book. I believe someone with little or no religious background would struggle with following this book.
