Can leaders really be developed in only 30 days? Are leaders born or made? Before delving into much on this book, it is good to reiterate what the author wrote. This is one reality that, “Developing and growing into an effective leader is a never-ending journey because it seems we never quite reach the finish line.” Hence all readers should know that effective leadership development is a process that cannot be completed.

Quick! I Need to Be a Leader in 30 Days! was written by Brad Dude. It is the fourth book in the Secrets of Temperament Series. It was published in 2017 by Dude Publishing. The author has more than 40 years of experience as a trainer, manager, and consultant to clients in more than 30 countries. With his vast experience, Brad has written this book to help individuals who may be promoted to new leadership positions without having time to familiarize with their new roles. It is a fact that millions of people are getting into leadership positions every year across the globe. However, transitions into new positions happen sometimes so fast such that people have no time for adequate training. This is one of the reasons why this book was written.

The book has six chapters. Different forms of leadership such as leading oneself, individuals, teams, and organizations are discussed broadly. The focus is not only on leadership at the present but also leading into the future. The main emphasis of the book is on the leader-follower relationship. The leader is admonished to build on a good working relationship with other people around him or her. This is what differentiates a leader from a boss. The different types of power are also discussed. However, leaders are encouraged to have the power of positive reputation. This is the highest and best form of power. The other issue handled is self-knowledge, especially on temperament. To find out more, you will have to grab a copy of this book.

This book title does not imply leadership can be perfected in 30 days. It was written with the primary intention of helping people develop leadership skills where and when there has not been adequate training. The aim is to help leaders to have their own ‘leadership toolboxes’. The toolbox will provide the new leader with an opportunity to select the appropriate concept, tool, manual, or model they deem useful for the situation at hand. The new leader should, therefore, aim to fill this toolbox because different situations will require different ways to handle them. There are many skills in this book that the reader can pick and store in his or her own personal ‘leadership toolbox’.

The book is practical in nature. This is because it involves live sessions with a strategic leadership advisor (SLA) who is assigned to the reader or participant. Weekly assignments are given after each chapter also. These assignments help to iterate what has been covered in each preceding chapter.
Why should one choose this book when there are other books on leadership? What I liked most about this book is that the author took time to stress on servant leadership. This concept was repeated throughout the book. We live in an era where leadership is not just about having a position but also valuing those around us. It was great to read that in a world where many will choose to be authoritarian, the author could invest in this book to train new leaders on the need to be servants first. This is in addition to checking their primary motivation for leadership.

This book was professionally edited. I did not notice any grammatical error while reading it. The language used was also simple. Therefore, I rate it 4 out of 4 stars. The book will make a big impact in the leadership role of any reader or participant who is open to new ideas. The good thing is that no one is promised that it will lead to perfection so it will not set one’s expectations high. I recommend this book to anyone who has a desire to lead. It will appeal most to those who may have to lead teams or organizations.

In conclusion, I will quote this statement as written in the book, “Is this guidance all you need to be a successful leader? No. However, it’s a great first step that enables new leaders to successfully handle leadership tasks during their first year in a leadership role.”

When I read this on your review "servant leadership", this Bible verse came to my mind: (Luke 22:26) "...but he that is greatest among you, let him be as the younger; and he that is chief, as he that doth serve."

Knowing that there's Biblical leadership principle in this book has caught my attention. Thank you for this informative review.

Thanks for the thorough review! This book sounds like a great start for those starting out in a leadership position, and the POV sounds genuine and authentic. That's a refreshing standpoint for a leadership books these days! I'm happy to see there are books on the topic that come from a "servant leadership" rather than authoritarian. Thanks again!

"The leader is admonished to build on a good working relationship with other people around him or her" it seems like a very helpful book with leadership. I like it more for leading oneself, books with this aspect are rare. I would like to learn more. Enchanting review!

An interesting niche this book fills. When I read the title I hoped the book wasn't claiming you could learn to be a good leader in thirty days. It sounds like it is just offering some useful tools for those who don't have training available. I imagine it would be really useful in that regard. Thank you for a really great introduction to this book.
