From Drift to Shift Review

From drift to shift is a good motivational and inspirational book with compelling stories that express some of the major difficult situations in life, written by Jody Miller. It undoubtedly inspires the reader that no matter the challenge there is always a way out. Giving up is never an option. Miller tells stories of people who have encountered difficulties in life and have been able to make it through. This is precisely to encourage the reader appreciate the need to make a shift and live a blissful life.

Serita goes through foster care and with an unstable family, she struggles to meet her daily needs to survive. Emilee battles with cancer from a young age and overcomes it twice. Andy and Darren go through near-death experiences through accidents. Jerry suffers depression from a young age leading him to have an attempt on his life twice.

Miller goes on telling the story of the Achuar people and how the fight for the survival of the Amazon rain forest, after companies invade in, to mine oil, Sloan and her husband battle with cancer after suffering depression and infertility. Manoj and his wife talk on how they successfully started and established their company that collected deity art against all odds.

What I liked about the book was that most of the stories were emotional and could easily attract the reader’s attention. What I did not like about the book was that I had much expectation at the beginning that I felt were unsatisfied by the end of the book. There was no direct link from the stories to the theme of shifting apart from Miller’s explanations.

What I liked the most was how Miller derived and explained the lessons learned from each story. This was essential to help the reader gain significant knowledge from the book. What I did not like the most were that the stories were really prolonged by many irrelevant talks between and yet they were to convey a direct message this made some parts boring.

I rate this book 3 out of 4. This is because the urge to read more kept going down chapter by chapter, I felt that the stories could not effectively tell why? How the shift occurred? What was the outcome of the story? An example is the story of the Achuar people only revolved around Miller’s experience in the Amazons, but not the shifting. Miller did not effectively express the theme of the book in her stories.

Despite the few disappointments, I would love to read more from Miller, she is an inspiration and someone with a passionate desire to help and impact others. This book can be tremendously helpful to people who are suffering from depression, stress, low self-esteem and people in difficult situations.
