Review of the book: Health Tips, Myths, and Rips: A Physician’s Advice
Ever had one of those friends who tells you to try this dietary supplement or that supplement, or hands you a packet of pills and tells you that these vitamins are best? Well, it seems that these remedies may not be as good as what you might think.
Health Tips, Myths, and Rips: A Physician’s Advice is a refreshing approach by Morton E. Tavel, M.D. who takes an unbiased look at a range of issues that people deal with daily. From dietary supplements to organic or more conventional foods and whether there is any difference between the two, to the vitamins that are constantly promoted to boost one’s system and whether they have any influence if one is eating correctly in the first place. He discusses the pros and cons of energy drinks and coffee, to what flu medications one should use, and much more.
Along the way he dispels concerns around several issues, two of my favorites being those that surround bottled water, and paper towels versus the blower, the latter because of the possibility of increased cross-infection. Of great significance though, and one which I feel everyone needs to read, is the chapter on vaccinations, a topic that requires constant promotion to all families with young children. The doctor also makes no bones about naming those responsible for the myths that surround vaccinations today. In the section on Myths, several issues were of interest, one being the distinction between allergies to shellfish and Iodine, something that many people have often considered to be the same thing.
In many chapters, where required, Doctor Tavel has supplied additional sources where the reader can obtain further information, for example in ‘Chapter 36 The Fortified Food Myth’ he provides names of two websites where one can get information if one is unsure about what goes into any foodstuff and much of his information has been backed up by comprehensive research.
He explains everything in a very understandable and easy to read manner, leaving the reader with a clear and precise understanding of the points he is conveying. He is very forthcoming about what products do work and which ones don’t and makes mention of his preferences but allows the reader to make their determinations by not actively promoting one product over another. There is nothing long-winded about the book; chapters are short, concise, and not overly confusing with medical jargon. It is one of those books that should be on every bookshelf to use as a quick reference. It is also a book I recommend everybody should read, which is why I give this book 4 out of 4 stars.
