Review of the book: Health tips, Myths, and Tricks-Morton E Tavel, MD
This is an educative and informative book. It is properly indexed and the content is good. Initial few chapters are well drafted and splayed with dry humour, which sends the reader chuckling and smiling in agreement. The Health tips are interesting and useful. Certain topics such as – Eat a good breakfast: was mother right or wrong? , Why junk food is “double trouble”, Sleep nice or pay the price! ; can be included in the educational curriculum of students, so that healthy habits are inculcated by them right from a young age.
However as we proceed the book becomes tiring to read. In the latter half the language used is technical and difficult to comprehend. In the Myths portion, certain myths are not related to the main content. The Tricks part is very lengthy and boring. The author just goes on and on, giving his personal opinions, which seem to be prejudiced. The author also seems to be obsessed with the term -snake oil.
The major problem is in the grammar part of the book. The content swings between present tense and past tense. The sentences are lengthy and too many commas (,) are used in one single sentence. Due to this the reader just loses track of what exactly the author is trying to explain. The most common error is the placement of a comma before and after a conjunction. The glaring example is in the heading- Health tips, Myths, and Tricks. The comma after the word - Myths is not necessary. The author also makes a few contradictory statements, which leaves the reader confused. Some sentences need to be reframed because the conjunctions are either misplaced, or are missing. Different formats of measure values have been used in the same sentence. For example- 1⁄2 cups to 1.25 cups can be consumed. Normally we use only one type of measure, either fractions or decimals, not both of them together.
The tab has not been set properly; due to this the margins have shifted in some pages. The alignments of the sub points are also varying. Few typo errors are also seen, e.g. the space between the words in, as, much is missing and has been typed as - inasmuch. The words pre-existing is typed as preexisting, non-fat is typed as nonfat and blood flow has been spelt as- blood flood.
I give this book a rating of 2 out of 4 because even though the book is informative, it is a very tedious and boring book to read. It could have been edited better and presented in a simplified manner. Illustrations and simple language would have helped in reaching a wider audience.
