WHO TOLD YOU THAT YOU WERE NAKED? A REFRESHING REEXAMINATION OF THE GARDEN OF EDEN BY WILLIAM E. COMBS
This book is a Christian Literature which is written by a Pastor in order to enlighten believers in Christ about some truths about some biblical history and virtues that should characterize the life of a true born again Christian. Therefore, this book appeals to Christians the most and non-Christians the least. The book begins with the author narrating the story of Adam and Eve before and after the fall. The author narrated the story of how they were driven out of the garden by God as if he was personally there which creates a deeper understanding of the story which makes it interesting. The title of book was derived from the question God asked Adam in the book of Genesis chapter three verse eleven (Gen 3:11). The term “nakedness” in this book goes beyond the physical unclothedness of Adam and Eve to mean their sense of shame and guilt they felt after God asked them where they were.
The book further explains how Cain, Adam and Eve’s son committed murder because of the nature of sin that was transferred to him by his parents. Adam and Eve were naked before this incident. What opened their eyes was their newly acquired knowledge of good and evil. The book further explains little faith which is described as something smaller than a grain of mustard seed which is potent, self-willed and presumptive. Real faith can move mountains no matter how small, performs some work and also seek God’s will and his desire to know his mind and solution to our problems. Jesus Christ is the only Son of Adam whose lifestyle mirrored the law of the Spirit of life. As the only Son of Adam who did not sin and fall short of the glory of God, Jesus became God’s gracious gift, put forward as a faultless propitiation by his sacrifice on the cross.
Since Christ is God incarnate, He is the exact imprint of God’s nature. The Lord created man without the knowledge of good and evil, so our nature is not his exact imprint. However, He did create us in His image and likeness. There are three avenues the Lord uses to assist us in our walk with him. These include the Bible, God’s voice and his peace. We are advised not to try to drive the darkness out but to just turn on the light. We can enter God’s rest through faith knowing His completed work is both revealed to us and carried out in us by Jesus Christ with all the energy that he continues to manifest within us.
There are so many things I like about the book. First, it appeals to my Christian beliefs since I am a Christian. Through the book, I have been enlightened and educated about some biblical truths concerning the fall of man, the advent of sin, how to overcome sin and the principles to follow Christ which include faith, steadfastness, prayer, reading and mediating on God’s word. Second, the language of the book is simple and straightforward which makes it easy for reader to quickly grasp. Also, the way the stories were narrated by the author is captivating which makes the reader to continue reading the book. Third, the author includes study questions for discussion after each chapter which the reader can answer in order to know if the chapter is properly understood. Fourth, the book is well edited and formatted. There are no typographical or grammatical errors. The paragraphs are distinct and the line spacing is okay. The discussion in each chapter is coherent and cohesive. The main points in each of the chapters were highlighted which makes the reader to be able to pinpoint the cogent messages in each chapter. What I like the most about the book is that author explained some passages in the Bible in the way I never thought about. This is because I like any author that present clear facts and truthful interpretations. In my opinion, there is nothing I like least in the book.
I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. The reason is that the book is professionally edited. I recommend others to read this book especially Christians if they want to be exposed to some basic Christian tenets and truths.
