And Then I Met Margaret is a collection of short stories and lessons learned by author Rob White. The book starts with stories from Rob’s childhood and progresses through his college days, early adult life, and professional career, all telling a valuable life lesson in a lighthearted, but impactful, way.
Rob White grew up in a small town in New England, where all that was expected of him was to follow in his father’s footsteps through a job at the local factory. From a young age, Rob knew that wasn’t what he wanted for his life, and he worked his way through college, summer jobs, and a couple career changes to become a successful real estate and restaurant entrepreneur. While his life alone is inspiring, it’s the way his stories come to life that makes it easy to connect and draw motivation from the book.
I’m typically not a fan of spirituality or self-help books, as I find they often come across as preachy or unattainable, however I was pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed reading And Then I Met Margaret. Each chapter took less than 10 minutes to read, which allowed for enough detail to understand the story, but wasn’t overwhelming or weighed down. Additionally, the way the life lessons are presented is in a factual and practical way, where the reader can easily see ways to apply the lesson to their daily life. Often, there are two situations for the learning in each chapter, so the reader immediately learns a few applications.
I found this book to be inspirational in a natural and organic way. I never felt that Rob White was pushing his beliefs on me, or that the book ever turned into preaching. Instead, the lessons are presented in a humorous way, which kept each story very engaging. Each story is told colorfully, with interesting details to help paint the picture of each situation. Even beyond just the lessons, learning about his life and the different directions he took was very aspirational and fascinating. He certainly seems to have never lost his humbleness throughout his career, which made me root for him to succeed and connect with him on a more personal level.
I rate this book 3 out of 4 stars. I really enjoyed reading the book, and found both the stories and the overall book to be the exact right length that kept my attention and inspired me to apply the life learnings. I was very skeptical of this book before I started, and really did not think I was going to like it, but I was delightfully surprised by how much I liked reading it. I will definitely be recommending this book to friends and family, and to anyone who thinks motivational or self-help books aren’t for them!
