Morton E. Tavel, MD, in his book Health Tips, Myths and Tricks has provided a well thought and evidence based analysis of the myths which weigh down heavily on our choices to good health. Morton is a specialist retired physician in internal medicine and cardiovascular diseases and a tenured faculty member at Indiana university school of medicine. In his career as a medical research scientist, his work and experience is demonstrated in his track record, backed up with research findings reported in more than 120 publications, several scientific editorials/letters and important book reviews. In my own view he is an excellent writer whose professionalism has distinguished from other writers who do not base their writing prowess on scientific findings and justifications.
It is worthwhile to note that, this man spent most of his time writing this wonderful and well-grounded book for the benefit of good health and humanity. He has provided most insightful reading on ailments of great human health concern including but not limited to blood pressure, heart diseases, vaccinology and preventable children diseases and diabetes Juvenile and adult on-set . He meticulously provided remedial opportunities for such ailments including use of nutritional supplements and their health benefits and also dispelled the concerns accompanying the efficacy and safety of vaccines.
One thing I have liked about Morton, is the fact that he brings out the contents of his discussions efficiently and provides an exit strategy for individual judgement on topics that he deems controversial as the case for the utilization of genetically modified foods, promotional adverts from pharmaceutical companies’ Discovery of the wonder drugs and so forth which is only meant to exploit the consumers. Here Morton has also assessed the importance of utilizing naturally occurring foods such as fish. He notes that fish is a source of omega, an important growth and development stimulating oil/substance, but he is also quick to caution users that this source of food is equally toxic if consumed in large quantities for it contains traces of mercury. He notes that while fish is a good source of white meat, mercury found in fish as a contaminant is poisonous and toxic especially to young children and aged person. Therefore he recommends for judicious use of this product for health benefits of growing children and aged person. He also raises issue with the utilization of table salt (sodium chloride), then he recommends usage of green tea and chocolate because these products act as antioxidants/detoxifying agents in the body hence promoting good health and wellbeing.
Generally, Morton, is bent on not only helping us to embark on living a health life, but also be guided by good judgement and principle wants us to live in a way that benefits each other and our environment. He has encouraged us to always bask in the sun so as to gain from the naturally abundant vitamin D originating from the sun. Similarly, he has also advised us to be cautious of the UV light that also originates from the sun since it can also affect our vision in different ways. He encourages to develop good eating habits such as consuming the right food portions at regular intervals, eating enough breakfast, drinking enough water daily and at specific times, eating different types of fruits as good sources of vitamins and discourages us from eating highly processed foods and artificial sweeteners. He has encouraged us to keep ourselves fit by doing enough physical exercise for health muscle tone, development, rejuvenation and brain health. In other words, those myths which have pulled us down and weighed down on our abilities to work better and live a better health live have been cast down by Morton and I have no doubt in my mind that this book is worth the reading and investment of time.
In conclusion, I will always recommend this book to all my friends for a reading so that they can gain health tips and tricks to keep them strong and face live in a better way always. One very minor thing I noticed about his writing and which is very difficult to prevent is the fact that there are some typographical errors. Based on the above review I can give 4 out of 4 rating on this book.
