Who Told You You Were Naked? A Refreshing Examination of the Garden of Eden, written by William Combs, a man of God, is a study of the Bible, as seen through the eyes of the author. Each chapter is devoted to stories taken from the Bible and interpreted by the author.
The book first begins with Adam in the Garden of Eden. The writer takes the liberty of inserting his own thoughts of the imagined conversations Adam has with the animals in the Garden of Eden. In an effort to create a photograph in the mind of the reader, detailed descriptive paragraphs of Adam's surroundings are inserted to make Adam come alive and become more human.
The author introduces each chapter of the book with the Biblical version and then translates the story into language simple enough to be understood by children. Of course, his perceptions and explanations of the meaning of things, are his alone and help to clarify the lessons he perceives are being taught by the Bible story.
After each chapter, Combs has listed several questions, in an effort to provoke a lively discussion of his conclusions. Periodically, the author has chosen to bring attention to certain statements he makes by "flagging" them in a shaded box on the page. Occasionally, thoughts are invoked that seem to have no relevance to the subject being discussed.
I did not like this book because the author inserted too much of himself and his beliefs into his narrative explaining the Bible. To go so far as to vocalize the thoughts and create the conversations of Adam, Eve and even God, seems to be arrogant and presumptuous. Each chapter reads like a sermon this man of God has given to his congregation, often using words, descriptions and thoughts that help to ignite a spark of interest and would appeal to youngsters.
This book would be useful and an excellent guide to promoting discussions about the teachings found in the Bible for a study group, as the questions at the end of each chapter will help to stimulate and guide conversations.
I rate this book 2 out of 4 stars because it will appeal only to a small selection of people. It is a useful tool for those seeking explanations of life from the Bible, for use in Bible studies, Sunday schools or sermons; however, one must always be reminded that the opinions, dialogue and descriptions articulated throughout the book are uniquely the interpretations of the author. This book would be useful to anyone reexamining or questioning their own Faith.
