“Keys to Harmony” by Margalit Jakob is a heartfelt memoir about suffering from depression. The author takes us on a journey of her life and her struggles. Her triumphs occurred later in life. She shares intimate moments, analyzing them as she tries to make sense of life and her purpose. Although she had a happy childhood, her creativity was stunted by adults who abused their authority. Her sense of accomplishment as a pianist was unknowingly crushed. By repressing the abuse, she fell further into depression and considered several methods to commit suicide over the years.

As I read the book, I felt enormous empathy for her plight in life. She suffered from severe depression and limped through life with suicidal ideation, yet she possessed an enormous talent for creativity. She is a pianist, an expressive therapist, and so much more, yet she could not find the help she needed for decades. I felt relieved when she finally found the right psychiatrist, who helped her break free of depression. Later in life, she found the “keys to harmony” and began to help others realize theirs.

I give this book 4 out of 5 stars, as I highly recommend it. Remarkably, writing this book was part of Ms. Jakob’s healing process. I omitted a star because there are a few grammatical errors. The book flows seamlessly through the author’s life in a logical progression. Her honesty and courageous sharing reveal self-healing while motivating others to do the same. The book appeals to a wide range of readers. Her ability to effectively heal others in therapy because of her life experiences is inspiring. Her clients are very lucky to benefit from her wisdom. Ms. Jakob shares case vignettes at the end, utilizing her visualization techniques. Maybe she will write another book and share more of these successes. It would also be a thought-provoking read.
