Most people have issues, lose relationships, and even end lifetime friendships because they cannot have hard conversations. The author of this book, A State of P.L.A.Y.S., Veronica Hislop, was inspired after having a much-needed conversation with a colleague.

She defines the term "State of Plays" as the current situation or circumstance between two opposing parties. She went ahead to break down the word P.L.A.Y.S., which means preparation, listening, addressing, yielding, and safety. Preparation would help you manage your feelings and emotions before or while having a conversation with a person or before taking on a task; it has to do more with the general state of your mind while dealing with a conversation. She advises that it would be more beneficial for people to assess their fears and anger and, if justified, understand their triggers. These tips would help guide people in managing their emotional state.

One of the significant strengths of this book is that it is grounded in real-life situations and experiences. This is beneficial because the stories, such as that of Cindy and Todd—a couple facing marital issues after Cindy discovered Todd's affair—make the book much more relatable. The primary purpose of this example was to emphasise the different ways in which Cindy handled the situation; one of these was to have a respectful conversation with Todd. The examples in the book, along with the author's lessons that guide these examples, made it stand out even more. Another thing I appreciate about this book is that the author's framework is straightforward to apply and understand.

I have no dislikes about this book. This book is beautifully written, very educational, and easy to comprehend. It was also perfectly edited, as I did not spot a single error while reading, and for this reason, I rate it a solid 5 out of 5 stars. I learned a lot from this book, and I highly recommend it. It is perfect for coaches, parents, and couples.
