The book Memoir of a Deserter by Thomas Foster, from the title itself, is a compilation of a person's journey from the struggle for convenience by joining the army until fighting for the life where he never felt more like living. Along with his journey in finding his place in the world, he crossed islands until he found the kind of living that was opposite to that of the city. In this book, the author talks about his personal development that he found in different places in the world, in different settings.

Reading the book feels like the author is talking to you face-to-face. The book is written in the first-person point of view, where the author is telling his own story with some dialects, occasionally. The author also uses a conversational tone in writing his book, which can be noticed by his choice of words and the way it is written.

Additionally, the book is easy to read and follow. Though it contains some Spanish words, the author has made it comprehensible by putting their meaning or what they are in English in parentheses. Titles can also be noticed in the book, which indicate what the following paragraphs are going to be about. The story has a good flow as it follows a timeline, from the farthest date to the latest of his life story, and these titles make his stories easy to follow.

Furthermore, the book is engaging. The author has been descriptive throughout the book, especially in describing his life full of colors in the Caribbean. Some photos can also be found in the book, which make it more interesting. I hope that the author could add some more photographs to bring the reader into more of a tour-like reading. However, the author has stated in the book that, for some reason, he lost some of his documentary materials about his life in other parts of the world, which is inconsolable.

Overall, I give Memoir of a Deserter by Thomas Foster a rating of 4 out of 5 stars. It could have been more engaging and unique with more illustrations. I suggest that the author add more of his documentation about his life on the island. However, I praise the author for successfully telling his story in a clear and humorous way. It’s also well-edited and a good read for those who are looking for adventure and inspiration for what to do in life.

I recommend this book to adults since it contains some sexual content that is written in general terms, and sometimes descriptively, which is not good for readers under legal age.
