Deceit v. Deceit by Vernon Baumrind tells the story of Vernon's marriage, where he's a loyal and devoted husband while his wife is unfaithful.

The book begins on a Wednesday afternoon during the December holidays. As Vernon was playing with the kids, it dawned on him that his wife was cheating. She was not out shopping for groceries as she had said, but with her gynecologist. He quickly picked up his kids and headed to the gynecologist's office, where he confirmed his suspicions. He found his wife with Ewing, the gynecologist.

He did not confront them but returned home silently. He started putting the pieces together and got answers as to why his wife had been acting strangely for the past few months and why Linda, his wife, chased him out of their bedroom and suggested that they should separate at the end of the holidays. All that was left for him was to fight for his children's custody.

It was so painful for him to know about his wife's indiscretions, but he had to pretend he didn't know in order to gain custody of the children. He started gathering evidence by bugging the home telephone and hiring a private detective and a divorce attorney without his wife knowing. The process was painful and difficult for Vernon, but it finally bore fruit as he got what he was fighting for.

I liked how the author explained the characters in detail. Linda is shown as a wife who threw away her twelve-and-a-half-year marriage for sexual pleasures. Dr. Ewing is the one character I didn't like. He's portrayed as a sex addict who misused his gynecology career to have sex with his patients. I liked Vernon the most because he was a good father who deeply cared for his kids. Everything he did, whether legal or illegal, was because of his love for his children.

The book's writing style is remarkable, as it's simple and easy to understand. There is nothing I disliked about it. The book is professionally edited.

I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars because of how it brings out family values. Marriage may be hard sometimes, but before you start cheating, try to work things out. I learned that if children are involved, put them first before your own interests. It's a great read.
