The book “Flew Too High” by Louie Mandrapilias is a memoir about his experiences as a gay man , a drug addict, and a smuggler.

The book follows Louie, a Greek raised as an altar boy with strong church beliefs, who finds it hard to come out of the closet as gay because it's against the church doctrines he has been taught. When he's 21, he visits New York for a two-week vacation, and his life takes a new turn.

In New York he meets Govind, who makes him feel comfortable in his sexuality as he's able to express it without fear of being judged. Louie even changes his name to Eli as a new beginning, no longer struggling with self-esteem issues and PTSD he has suffered since childhood. Govind brings out a new version of him and introduces him to strong drugs he had never tried before, like heroin and cocaine.

Louie continues to follow Govind's teachings since Govind promised to show him God. He even drops out of school to please Govind despite the warnings from people who cared for him. He starts smuggling drugs from India , New York, and South America. He even disposes of a person who dies in Govind's apartment without the authorities knowing. His actions come to an end when he's busted in Miami Airport with drugs.

The book's writing style is remarkable and simple to understand. The most fascinating thing about it is how the author ends the book in suspense. However , I didn't like that the book is filled with a lot of profanities and sex scenes. It somehow made me uncomfortable, and because of that, I rate it 4 out of 5 stars.

This is a great book that I highly recommend to anyone struggling with his sexuality and afraid of coming out. It’s also for anyone who is deep in drugs , feels like there's no second chance in life, and has given up.
