This book, Spirituality: Modern Disciples of Jesus Christ, attempted to tackle problems that many modern Christian’s face such as how to handle negative thoughts and how to find peace in a busy, chaotic world. They did this by posing questions to readers, sharing personal examples, and offering advice. However, the author’s message gets buried beneath the flowery language and poor grammar. In an attempt to emphasize specific words, they use an excessive amount of quotation marks and capitalization. Neither one of these are meant to be used for emphasis and yet the author uses one or both of these in nearly every sentence! They also used a lot of Christian phrases and buzz words that would make this a difficult read for people with other beliefs (which normally wouldn’t be an issue, but they specifically state that this book is for people of any belief system). Despite this fact, the author references a surprisingly few Bible verses for a book discussing how to be a better disciple. If, however, you can get past the awkward and clunky writing style, you will find a book with lovely advice. I would consider this a book better suited for new Christian’s, but life long Christians or those with different beliefs would also find some messages that apply to them. Overall, I would rate this book a 3 out of 5. I decided on this rating based on two primary factors. First, although some of the messages were impactful, others were vague and lacked depth. Second, the excessive use of quotation marks made most of the sentences grammatically incorrect. This author clearly cares deeply about the topics they wrote about and does have some great ideas to share. They just need to do some heavy editing in order for that to be easily understood by the readers.
