It seems like today everyone has an opinion on health. Some are convinced that oils are the way to treat everything, while others claim that juice cleansing diets are how they dropped those pesky pounds. But what actually works? Should you stock up on those vitamins? That’s what Health Tips, Myths, and Tricks: A Physician’s Advice is here to explain.

Dr. Morton E. Travel uses this book to tackle several popular health topics, telling us whether current health fads have any merit. He uses recent studies to show the facts behind the trends and whether or not you should buy into these trends. Basically, if you want to know if you should eat breakfast in the morning or whether diet pills actually work, this book gives the hard facts and advice on how to live a healthy life.

I found this book to be very interesting, and it has a lot of good relevant information. Dr. Tavel gives his two cents on some pretty hot topics that are going around in health. But it’s not just his opinion; he uses several recent studies to either support or debunk popular health trends. It helped me see what I should do to stay healthy.

But the book does have a few flaws. While all the topics were very interesting, the order of the chapters felt random, and there were even a couple of chapters that didn’t seem to fit the rest of the book (specifically the chapter on whether or not you can fool a lie detector test). On top of that, the formatting was a bit inconsistent. While it didn’t detract too much from the content of the book, it was distracting.

There was also a bit of tone confusion. Sometimes, the book felt like I was reading from a textbook, while other times, it seemed like I was having a conversation with a someone. The difference of tones usually blended together well enough, but it could be jarring.

I give this book 3 out of 4 stars. It had some great and interesting information based on recent and relevant studies. It was an enjoyable read overall that made me feel much more informed about how to keep my body healthy. But the organizational and tone issues were pretty distracting. This book probably could’ve benefited from another round of editing. But if you’re looking for a doctor’s opinion on some popular health topics, definitely check out Health Tips, Myths, and Tricks: A Physician’s Advice.
