In her memoir, Keys to Harmony, Margalit Jakob invites the reader along on her journey through depression. That said, Keys to Harmony is not a depressing book. It is a fascinating account of how a young woman falls into a depressive state after a heart shattering incident, and tries to navigate her way through it, even as she becomes a wife, a mother, a teacher and a therapist.

Jakob’s book succinctly describes an often-misunderstood condition and details the roadmap she used to personally overcome it. Along the way, she found help and, at times, resistance from those around her. Her story is almost heroic, in that she never gave up on her quest and, once she found the answers, she sought to share her knowledge with therapy clients and readers alike.

Keys to Harmony is beautifully written. Margalit Jakob has mastered her use of language as delightfully as she has her piano keys. Her story is told with honesty and is very relatable to anyone who has ever had a moment of doubt or imposter syndrome. The reader doesn’t have to hear her music to know that she is likely also an excellent musician despite insecurities she faced with regards to her talent. While the book is appealing to everyone, it will especially motivate psychologists, musicians and creators.

I would rate Keys to Harmony 5/5 stars as Margalit Jakob’s writing style and story-telling ability outshine a potentially sad topic. In fact, many of her internal thoughts are downright funny. It’s clear, by the smooth flow of the story, that the book has been professionally edited. Some might find that the book runs a bit too long, but this is subjective.

I would encourage anyone looking to improve their lives to read Keys to Harmony, as I am sure it will leave the reader hopeful and motivated to improve their own lives. I am interested in seeing more work by this author/musician/therapist.
