The MECE Muse by Christie Lindor is a nonfiction book for consultants and aspiring consultants. It provides a guideline to unwritten rules and habits of great consultants.
The book begins by defining who a consultant is. It explores the basic habits and decision-making skills of a great consultant. Questions like, “What makes a good consultant?” and “How do I decide on the kind of consultant I want to be?” are answered in the book. Furthermore, the author highlights etiquette as one of the core principles of good customer service. A consultant needs to know that how customers are treated matter a great deal. Additionally, it is crucial for a consultant to have a professional presence, be polite, and maintain his network.
The book asserts the need to have a good work-life balance. It is essential to note that consultancy is primarily about helping other people solve problems. To accomplish this, integrity is a vital attribute. A consultant must aspire to be a trusted advisor to his clients. He must be eager to listen more and speak less in order to appreciate the client's perspective. This will improve the consultant’s problem-solving ability. In addition, the book emphasizes the need to genuinely enjoy one’s work.
Many of the strategies in the book can be applied to other kinds of employment. For instance, the author explores the number of options to choose from when exit opportunities come up. She also lists some guiding principles that have worked for her career in the conclusion section of the book. The role of mentors in building and molding careers is stressed. Irrespective of the career field, mentors are important as they help to avoid the mistakes they made on their career journeys.
I love the fireside chats at the end of each chapter. The interviewees provide insight into how they launched their consultancy careers and how they surmount unique challenges. The pointers in the book can help not only consultants but most people in the corporate world. At the end of the book, bullet points summarizing each chapter are inserted to give the reader a recap of the entire work. Due to the immense impact of technology in the world today, the role of artificial intelligence in consulting is also mentioned to equip consultants for the future of consulting. This is both enlightening and empowering.
Nevertheless, I would have loved if the author also included a fireside chat with someone who left consultancy to pursue another career in a corporation. It would have indicated another point of view of consulting from the client’s world. Notwithstanding, I give the book a rating of 4 out of 4 stars. The book is professionally edited, and the information inherent therein is critical to readers in the corporate environment.
