Deceit is book about a man who loved his children so much that he would go to any means to keep them safe and in a stable environment. I can't imagine the amount of stress that had been placed on the two children while living in this situation; especially during the holiday season when they are supposed to be having so much joy and happiness. Vernon showed great restraint throughout the book while dealing with the betrayal of someone he loved very much. There are not many people that could have held back all of the anger and heartbreak that he was keeping inside. As I read the book, I was able to relate to the pain that Vernon was feeling and was rooting for him in the end. As a mother myself, I am not sure how Linda could have made the choses that she did. Especially, when she was uncomfortable with many of the things that she was being asked to do. I am not sure if it was the rush of experiencing something new, or just selfishness on her part.
Overall, I would rate this book as a 4 out of five. There was so much left out that would have showed what events led up to the betrayal. I believe the book could have been better if we had more insight as to why the affair had taken place, with the events leading up to it. Readers would then have a better understanding as to the reason for the affair.
This book shows that the infidelity of one spouse, for their own pleasure, can destroy so many lives. One which even ended tragically; because of not being able to cope with the events that took place. This book who be best suited for readers who are not easily offended by the profanity and sexual content that is in the book.
I was very glad to find out that these events did not impact the Baumrind children, in the long run, and they were able to grow up and have families and live normal lives. It was also sad that this had such an impact on Vernon and he was not able to let any other woman into his life and has had to live alone for all of these years.
