What if by simply refreshing your state of mind, you could improve your relationships, your health and your career? This is what motivational speaker and corporate consultant, Dr. Randy Ross proposes in his timely self-help book, Fireproof Happiness.

The core message in this book is that hope (not to be confused with optimism) can help you overcome adversity and flourish in all aspects of your life. Ross backs up this message with multiple psychological studies and research that demonstrate that even in the direst of times, hope has prevailed for those who practice it.

Written during the Covid 19 pandemic, Ross explores how even during war, health crises and financial collapse, those who have been able to see the light at the end of the tunnel have outdone those who haven’t.

Fireproof Happiness is written in a relatable, easy-to-read voice. It reinforces each protocol with fascinating examples of real-life companies, celebrities and people the reader may never have heard of, who have either excelled or flailed according to their commitment to hope.

There are many quotable lines. I especially liked the description of "balcony people" versus "basement people." The information Dr. Ross relays will encourage even the most pessimistic of readers to reconsider their perspective on life and should the reader want to implement the recommendations in Fireproof Happiness, Dr. Ross has included links to worksheets where the reader can identify their own source of hope.

Dr. Ross lays out ten simple practices to implement the hope philosophy. Additionally, like the AA mantra, “the wisdom to know the difference,” he also points out when it’s time to accept reality, study options, and consider a new direction, while still maintaining hope.

This book is well-written and intelligent. The editing is both effective and flawless. Some of the content in this book is repetitive, however, the repetition serves to successfully reinforce the message.

I would rate this book 4/5 stars and would recommend it to anyone looking for easy ways to improve their lives no matter their circumstances.
