I really wanted to like this book, but ultimately, I could only give it 2 out of 5 stars. The premise of the book was cool, offering advice specifically to moms who want to get into the entrepreneurial world. As someone interested in striking a balance between work and home life, I was eager to read this book and learn about the ins and outs of entrepreneurship.

Now, granted, there was technically some good content in this book, which is why it wasn’t just one star. The book talks about different CRM platforms, like Asana and Salesforce, as well as different strategies for getting starting funds for your business (angel investors, crowd-funding, small business loans, etc.). In general, though, I feel that the book doesn't delve deeply into these topics, not enough for the reader to actually get a good idea of what might work for them.

I also went into the book expecting it to integrate the roles of being a mother and being an entrepreneur more seamlessly. Instead, the book goes back and forth very disjointedly between talking about concepts about growing your business and then switching to talking about what it’s like to be a mother. The closest I feel the book got to integrating those ideas was when it talks about how motherhood teaches you resiliency and therefore you can handle running a business by yourself. Otherwise, it was mostly switching between talking about the difficulties of motherhood (valid!) and giving really cursory overviews of different business strategies and ideas. I think this book would have been more impactful had it focused more on bridging the gap between the skills developed in motherhood and how those transfer to a business endeavor.

Really, though, the biggest critique I have of this book is the readability. First of all, the book was mostly in second-person, and I found that jarring. More importantly, though, there were many word choice errors in the book. Sometimes it felt like the author had been overeager using a thesaurus and other times, it was fully the wrong word/turn of phrase (for example, when talking about borrowing money, using the verb ‘loan’ instead of ‘taking out a loan’ or ‘borrowing’). The sentence structure was often awkward as well. (‘Loaning money is conventional to do when you start your business,’ for example.) It made things very confusing at times and quite difficult to slog through as a whole.

Like I said, I truly did want to like this book. I went into the book excited to learn some new things about running my own business, but the awkward sentence structure and the number of errors really took me out of the book. It was hard to focus on the content, and even when I did, I was sometimes left wanting more information than the book offered. I think there’s certainly a world where this book can be a great resource for mothers and other busy people looking to break into the entrepreneurial space. The author is very encouraging, and I think that’s a great strength of the book. Personally, though, I think it needs some major clarity and revisions before it becomes an effective guide for aspiring mompreneurs.
