The book “When Business Is Love: The Spirit of Hästens—At Work, At Play, and Everywhere in Your Life” by Jan Ryde truly sticks to its worthy title with its invaluable life lessons that can be used and reused to heal and grow in all aspects of life. It portrays the humble beginnings of the author's ancestors as saddlers, the struggles and evolution of their family business which is now a successful and well-established bed-making company. From sourcing high-quality resources to regulating, calibrating, and finessing mundane tasks plays a major role in their success.
Though I found the concepts on sleep, its importance on awake time and it related to a Hastens bed to be a marketing ruse, at the same time there are important principles on how a business is run on love and gaining happiness and content in return.
Chapter two explores the author’s life, relationships, and his path to Hastens. Although their upbringing was comfortable, the parents’ struggles were very real and cannot be ignored. As a shy child with a crossed eye, he was frequently bullied. Overcoming these challenges has rewarded the author, winding up in a position as a highly-rated associate professor.
This read was very helpful and informative and it is definitely a reread, not just for a business but for important lessons in life as well. It encourages you to get in touch with your inner child, give out your best service despite competition, to have a positive outlook on life, to have an abundance mindset and it guides you too on how to feel abundant by simply being grateful. I believe it is life and its nuances that the author has put forth. The book has brought into light some forgotten thoughts about values that I lived by in the past or had a fleeting thought of the right thing to do but then blinded by the necessities of life. I have come across vision and mission earlier but have not given it a deeper thought, nor has someone put them out as simply as the author has, as being on a mission to make a vision come true. I found no editing errors as well. And so, on a scale of one to five, I would say it’s a five.
