Who Told You That You Were Naked by William E Combs is a non-fiction Christian book. The book is divided into 10 chapters that will take you through the story of the fall of mankind. The bulk of the book retells the story of Adam and Eve and how through the serpent they came to eat of the forbidden fruit of the knowledge of good and evil. In his retelling of the story, he embellishes a little adding his own twist on what might have happened. He adds such things as what the conversations between Adam and Eve might have been like. His story telling was very entertaining and added to understanding the analyses of the passage.
I think he could have better explained his format instead of just jumping right into it. Nowhere does he say that the retelling of the passage is just his interpretation of the passage or that it is a paraphrase of the story. It left me a little confused at first.
The most appealing part of the book is the fresh insights he offers of the content. William Combs takes an old, very familiar piece of scripture and breathes new life into it. Who Told You That You Were Naked reexamines the story of Adam and Eve and the early days in the garden of Eden. He has a wonderful ability to retell the story in a format that makes the story fresh and yet true to the original intent and story. While it is a personal interpretation of the Biblical passage, he offers plenty of supportive passages to assist with his thoughts.
William Combs presents theology in a way that the average reader can easily grasp. It is well written and well researched. The theology of God’s grace and God’s redemptive plan for man is very deeply explained and new insights offered.
His format of retelling the passage in story form paints the passage in word pictures that make the passage seem new and fresh.
I especially liked the study questions at the end of each chapter. This book would make a great Sunday School or small group study.
A pleasant read with fresh thoughts and new insights. I give this book a 3 out of 4 stars. The book could have been a little better organized or at least the organization could have been explained more clearly. I think the paraphrasing of scripture should be made clear as well. Overall a good read.
