Since the creation of modern medicine, there has been a propensity to spread misinformation, old wive’s tales, and to take advantage of those who do not have advanced medical training. Dr. Morton E. Tavel MD, FACC saw this throughout his many years as a physician and as a Clinical Professor. Now retired, he has made it his mission to debunk and clarify these various false claims made by mothers and physicians alike. Using his professional knowledge and a wide array of scientific studies and research, Dr. Tavel wrote Health Tips, Myths, and Tricks. It is obvious that the author did all the research behind each topic, thoroughly articulating his points knowledgeably.

Have you ever been told by your mother or grandmother to eat chicken noodle soup when sick, to take Vitamin C, or to use aloe vera on a wound? How about a commercial or program touting the benefits of their self appointed “miracle” product? These are only a few examples of topics examined in this book. The author explains in depth the reasons that these tales and claims are false, referencing scientific studies for support. This gives the reader an elevated understanding of the topic, which in turn facilitates readers to make healthier lifestyle decisions.

As far as programs and “miracle” products go, the author explains the political and financial motives behind selling and pushing these products. He discusses a fellow famous physician named Dr. Oz, and explains why he may be motivated to associate himself with these products. Did you know that the FDA does not regulate supplements that are sold in department and other “health” stores? There have been studies examining these products that have found that they do not contain any of the product that the label states. They can make many claims on their label that have not been verified by any source. Dr. Tavel explains how to find the best supplements and which ones are actually safe, necessary, and effective.

Due to the author’s background in internal medicine and cardiovascular diseases, there are portions of the book that instruct how to avoid risk factors for cardiovascular disease and diabetes, to name a few. However, this is not the main focus of the book. The main focus is on debunking common health misconceptions and increasing overall health. This can be done through eating healthy and nutritional foods, and being a knowledgeable consumer. Pain management is also discussed, with a bevy of information pertaining to narcotic use and exercise as a pain reliever. I personally like that the topics focused on all aspects of health, and not just cardiovascular disease or weight. I did not, however, feel that the conclusion paragraph at the end of each chapter was necessary, as it reiterated what I had just read. Considering that the chapters are very short, it was just too repetitive for me.

I will be putting these tricks and knowledge to use with an updated diet and exercise routine to increase my current and future health. As someone who is employed in the health field, even I gained information from this book. However, I do believe that the book was written in a way that makes it an easy read for those who are not medically inclined. I believe it would be beneficial for readers from all walks of life. Because of this I would give this book 4 out of 4 stars.
