Thoughts on Faith and Science by Michael John is an interesting philosophical book arguing the existence of God. Overall, the book made some convincing arguments. The book uses approachable language to make its arguments. I could generally follow the flow of thought that the author was describing. There were a few times that I thought he made some leaps in logic, but it’s also possible I just wasn’t able to follow the author’s ideas entirely.

The author first starts out with the very root of Christianity: What is truth? Using basic logic arguments, the author shows that the very idea of there not being an objective truth is itself impossible. With that basis in place, the author goes on to prove that the being we think of as God is actually truth. He uses scientific principles in addition to logical arguments to prove his points. It’s an interesting way to think about religion. I had never approached religion in this way before. The book has some quotable lines, such as, “The essential character of truth is that any attempt to negate it will only prove that it’s true,” and, “Or said another way, the ultimate destiny of Nature is to express the truth in all its glory.” I definitely highlighted several passages for later reflection.

Overall, I would rate this book four out of five stars. It is a pretty dense read. For being such a small book, it took a long time to read. Following the arguments took some brainpower. However, the arguments that were made were interesting to read and provoked a lot of thought. I will be revisiting this book at a later date to reread some of the chapters. If you enjoy reading a book for the sake of thinking thoughts, this is the book for you. If you enjoy different perspectives on religion, this book is also for you.
