Health Tips Myths and Tricks by Morton E. Tavel, MD - 4 out of 4 stars.
Health Tips Myths and Tricks is a practical guide to living a healthy life and avoiding health scams presented by a retired academician and internal medicine physician, Dr. Tavel. His extensive professional background offers creditability to this book. The first section Tips, has many approaches to weight loss and how limiting portion sizes, eliminating soft drinks and simply just drinking water is effective in battling unwanted pounds. Dr. Tavel also explains in great detail the dangers of antibiotic misuse and overuse, which was my favorite section.
The second section Myths, Dr. Tavel breaks down the most common health myths and challenges their validity with research findings. He addresses such myths as genetically modified foods and explains the real reason why this source of the food supply was generated. Is it necessary to have a health physical every year? He addresses this as well. Dr. Tavel even disputes the validity of the famous lie detector test.
The final section Tricks, is a buyer beware section in which Dr. Tavel exposes many of the most common health scams that everyone will encounter. These scams will leave you penniless while making these culprits richer. Such items addressed in this section include dietary supplements, anti-aging products, and the lists goes on. Dr. Tavel was even brave enough to expose the indiscretions of other medical professionals and their conflict of interest in regards to large pharmaceutical companies.
This book is worthwhile reading. As a medical professional, it served as a refresher of basic information, while enlightening me on matters I was not aware of. I liked that he supported his opinions by research and not made blanket statements. For the layperson, it is simply easy to follow the book, and I did not get bored reading it. This book will make you think differently about your health and how to keep money in your pocket.
I gave this book a rating of 4 out of 4 stars because of its simplicity making it easy for a quick read. I loved that the chapters were short and to the point. He did not drag out each topic. I was a little disappointed that Dr. Tavel was a little harsh on alternative medicine. I do incorporate this practice personally. However, I understand his point that there is no valid research to corroborate its use. I guess I will continue to use it at my own risk.
