Trekking: A Guidebook for Spiritual Transformation was written by Gene Maynard, a pastor with a doctorate in theology and spiritual formation. It is nonfiction that teaches ancient spiritual practices that can lead to a deeper spiritual experience of God.

While on a flight from Frankfurt to San Francisco, about 35,000 feet over the Atlantic, Gene Maynard meets a German professor who sheds light on the necessity of pilgrimage. It is this conversation that serves as the foundation for an enlightening and transformative journey on the El Camino de Santiago pilgrimage through northern Spain.

I chose to read this book because of its major theme: ancient spiritual practices for a deeper spiritual experience of God. In recent times, I have felt like there was more to the Christian journey than what I had already experienced—so much more that I had not yet unveiled. Finding the book at this time felt like a nudge in the right direction.

In almost every chapter, there was something new to learn. My eyes were opened by several extraordinary stories that I had never heard before. We, as Christians and people in general, are called to a deeper spiritual experience, and this book shows us a path to get there.

I will give it four out of five stars because it was quite an easy and enlightening read, with very helpful practices that are implementable and sure to impact your spiritual journey. I very much enjoyed going on this journey with the author.

I will recommend this book first to Christians who are tired of surface-only Christianity and who feel like there's something more to be gotten. I'll also recommend this book to anyone who feels restless, like something is missing, or like there's more to life than meets the eye. I can assure you that there's at least one thing of value to be found in this book.
